Project #01

TMNT: MUTANTS UNLEASHED

"The Turtle brothers must save New York from mutant chaos caused by the TCRI corporation! Set in the Mutant Mayhem universe, this brawler game can be played solo or in local co-op mode."

'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants Unleashed' is a 3D platform and brawler game with a strong narrative component where the player takes control of Leo, Raph, Donnie and Mickey to stop the “Mewbies” (new mutants) who are breaking chaos in New York. The TCRI corporation seems to be behind it all, and the intrepid four must use their ninja skills to restore order and protect the peace between humans and mutants.

Being able to work on such a beloved franchise was both an honor and a challenge because, although the game was aimed at a young audience, we also had to offer an interesting experience to adults who grew up with the Ninja Turtles and who also might be interested in our game.

'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants Unleashed' is not only a brawler, but also features social mechanics inspired by the 'Persona' series (Atlus Co.). This means that it has a rich and complex original narrative in which, in addition, the player can establish meaningful bonds with certain NPCs through special conversations and events.

Given the heavy workload involved, I joined the project to support the narrative team. I started helping with the composition of cinematic shots during conversations, but soon I was tasked with creating entire cutscenes and even overseeing the flow and progression of certain missions.

Although I had previous experience in narrative design, it was the first time I was involved so intensely in the development of cinematics. It was an enriching experience from which I have learned new aspects of design that reinforce my overall understanding of game development.

In short, my responsibilities on this project included:

  • Composing cinematic shots for important conversations between characters.
  • Implementing dynamic dialogues and banters that play naturally during gameplay.
  • Applying music changes during conversations to change the tone of the narrative situation.
  • Creating and implementing cinematics within the flow of missions/levels.
  • Communicating with the art and animation teams to plan the props and animations needed to make the cinematics.

Players can play as Leo, Raph, Donnie and Mickey in solo or cooperative mode.

The game features a strong narrative approach with an original story that follows the events of the movie.

Each new enemy was introduced in the game with a special cinematic the narrative team prepared.

One of the biggest challenges for the narrative team was to faithfully translate the script into the game in the form of interesting cutscenes.

Due to technical limitations, the narrative team also often had to reuse certain animations, but in a way that did not become repetitive.

Conversations with NPCs also required cinematic shot composition work. I contributed mostly to this aspect of the project.
